What is a Defense Alliance?

Defense alliance

Defense alliance is a strategic partnership between two or more nations, where they commit to support each other militarily in the event of war. It’s a way to ensure the safety of their populations and national interests, especially when they face common threats or dangers. Examples include NATO, NORAD, ANZUS and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

NATO’s essential and enduring purpose is to safeguard the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. Collective defence is at its heart – an attack against one or more members is considered to be an attack against all, according to the principle set out in Article 5 of NATO’s founding Washington Treaty. In a changing world, the Alliance will continue to innovate and adapt its policies, capabilities and structures. In addition to its members, NATO is committed to working with many non-member countries on a range of political and security-related issues, and many partner countries contribute to NATO-led operations and missions. This demonstrates the Alliance’s strong commitment to a peaceful solution of disputes, but also its willingness to use its military power when all other options have failed.
